Our Presbyter Team (Ministers)
My first home was a village near Whitby where from a few weeks old my parents took me to the Methodist Chapel.
I was joined later by my sister and brother. I did lots of jobs as our three sons grew up - from farming with my father to working in a post office and becoming a County Youth Leader. I began leading worship at the tender age of fourteen and felt God calling me to the ministry of Word and Sacrament. By the time my youngest son was born I had started to Candidate for the Methodist Ministry. I trained at the Wesley Study Centre in Durham as one of a group of ' Guinea Pigs' training non-residentially and alongside our full -time work. During this time I became a Lay-Pastoral Assistant, working for three years in the Whitby Circuit. I served for ten years in the Ryedale Circuit at Helmsley and then a further five years as Superintendant. I came to serve in the Middlesbrough and Eston Circuit five years ago. It is my honour to work with the people of Stainton, Marton and Nunthorpe as well as being Chaplin to the Methodist Asylum Project.

I was born in Hong Kong, China. Growing up, I attended a free church in Hong Kong and after immigrating into the UK twenty years ago; I started working for the Chinese mission organisation. After that, I became a lay worker for King's Cross Chinese Methodist Church to serve the Chinese asylum seekers for seven years. From there, I started my candidating as a Methodist minister and did my training in Queens College, Birmingham. I then served five years in Darlington District and now I am currently stepping into my sixth year in Middlesbrough & Eston Circuit, as well as Newcastle Central & East Circuit.
May God continue to guide me each step of the way, according to His will.
I’m delighted to be part of the Middlesbrough & Eston circuit ministering alongside Linthorpe Road, Trinity and Grove Hill Methodist Churches.
Prior to coming to Middlesbrough I expressed my ministry as part of the Connexional team in the Yorkshire Plus region of the Learning Network. Before that appointment I was a circuit minister in inner-city Leeds. I trained for ministry at Wesley College, Bristol after spending a number of years as a community worker in areas of multiple deprivation and working in university chaplaincy.
I grew up in Cumbria & the Lake District and so I really enjoy spending time outdoors whether being active or simply being mindful of creation. I like cooking for others and spending time with people, and when I’m on my own I can be found with my head in a book… something you’ll see line the walls of the manse!
I still feel an immense sense of privilege and excitement that my identity is caught up in the story of ministry and I’m looking forward to sharing this part of the journey with you.
As the newly appointed Presbyter in the Middlesbrough and Eston Circuit, I have been asked to introduce myself. I am Christopher. The brief biographical details are that I was born in Edinburgh, and grew up close to Durham City. I am married to Judith and between us we have six children. All of them are grown up and live in Manchester, Durham and on Tyneside. We have one grandson, Alfie, who is five. He likes coffee mornings almost as much as his granddad does.
I grew up in a Methodist family, my grandfather was a Methodist Local Preacher, and I have known since I was aged about ten that I too would be a Methodist Preacher. It took some time for me to accept that calling and to realise that it was a call to full- time ministry. I trained in Manchester and have served in the Harrogate, South-West Tyneside and Castle Eden Circuit. Preaching in the broadest sense has always been at the heart of my calling, a desire to share the excitement I find in the Gospel. I see following Jesus as the greatest adventure.
For fun, I enjoying riding my motorcycle, I love music and play the autoharp and the mandolin, and I can speak Esperanto.
No doubt we will discover much more about each other in the months and years to come.
Best wishes and every blessing Christopher
