For ten years, the hall at Nunthorpe Methodist Church in Middlesbrough has been more than just a room—it’s been a lifeline. What started as a vision from three retired speech and language therapists has blossomed into Play and Chat, a thriving community hub that welcomes 40 children every week
A decade ago, Julie O’Key, Lorraine Herring, and Judy Offiler saw an opportunity. With a large church space and a lifetime of professional experience with children, they imagined a place where families could truly belong.
The church community rallied behind the idea, raising £29,000 to transform the hall and outdoor area into a vibrant, child-friendly sanctuary. Today, that investment pays dividends in laughter, friendship, and support.
While the children enjoy crafts, dressing up, and storytime, the adults find something equally vital:
Professional expertise in a relaxed setting.
Many of the volunteers are retired specialists in:
"We make it known that parents can approach us," says co-founder Julie O'Key. "We’ve signposted a lot of children for developmental support."

Even in affluent areas, parenting can be isolating. Many young professionals move to Middlesbrough away from their extended families. Play and Chat bridges that gap, offering a "village" for those who feel adrift.
The group’s mission is simple: hospitality. While the environment is rooted in Christian values, the outreach is open to everyone. This mission extends to Praise and Play sessions—termly Sunday gatherings featuring Bible stories, music, and creative activities for the whole family.
"God is definitely here, having a good time," Julie reflects. "It’s an absolute joy; caring for mums, babies, and children."
Whether you’re looking for a place for your toddler to explore or you just need a friendly face and a chat, the doors at Nunthorpe Methodist are open.
