WORSHIP AT HOME  Middlesbrough and Eston Circuit – Sunday 21st June 2026

Hymn: StF 673 “Will you come and follow me if I but call your name?” (The Summons)

Prayers

Faithful God, you call us to follow Christ, yet we often prefer the safe and familiar path. We are afraid to speak of our faith, afraid of what others might think, and reluctant to trust you completely. Forgive us when fear is stronger than faith. Renew us by your Spirit, and give us courage to follow wherever Christ leads.

Amen.

In Christ we are forgiven, strengthened and set free to live in faith and hope. Thanks be to God.

Amen.

Reading: Matthew 10:24–39

Reflection:

In today’s Gospel Jesus speaks plainly to his disciples. He doesn’t promise them an easy life. Instead, he warns them that following him may bring misunderstanding, opposition and even rejection. Difficult words! We might prefer a Gospel that promises comfort and success. But Jesus knows that real discipleship involves courage. The disciples are being sent out to continue his work, and they will face loads of the same challenges that he faces.

At the heart of the passage, however, isn’t fear but reassurance. Three times Jesus says, “Do not be afraid.” He reminds his followers that God sees and values even the smallest sparrow. If God cares for sparrows, how much more does God care for those who belong to him?

Life isn’t about pretending that difficulties don’t exist. It’s about trusting that God is present with us in the midst of them. Many Christians throughout history have faced hard stuff because of their faith. But they discovered that God’s grace is sufficient for every challenge.

For most of us, discipleship is expressed in quieter ways. It might mean standing up for what is right when it would be easier to be silent. It might mean offering kindness when others are unkind. It might mean remaining faithful to Jesus in a world that often sees faith as irrelevant.

Jesus calls us to put him at the centre of our lives. That doesn’t mean loving our families less; it means loving God first so that all our other relationships are shaped by God’s love. When Jesus comes first, we discover who we truly are and what really matters. The promise of this Gospel is that we never walk alone. The God who knows us completely walks beside us. Therefore we don’t need to be afraid. We can live boldly, love generously and serve faithfully, trusting that God goes before us.

Hymn: StF 250 “Jesus calls us! O’er the tumult”

Prayers: Intercessions

Loving God, we pray for your Church throughout the world. Strengthen all who proclaim the gospel, especially those who face hostility, discrimination or persecution because of their faith. Give them courage and hope. We pray for our communities, for Middlesbrough, Eston and all the places where we live and work. Help us to be witnesses to your love through our words and actions. We pray for nations divided by conflict, hatred and injustice. Bring wisdom to leaders, comfort to refugees and peace to troubled places. We pray for those who are afraid today: those facing illness, uncertainty, loneliness or grief. May they know the assurance of your presence and the comfort of your love. We remember those known personally to us who need our prayers at this time. God of compassion, hear our prayers and make us instruments of your peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

 Amen.

Our Father…

Hymn: StF 484 “We will walk with God, my brothers”

Blessing:

Go into the world without fear, for Christ has called you by name. Trust in the God who watches over every sparrow and who treasures each one of us. And may the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit be with us and remain with us always.

 Amen
